The 97th Academy Awards nominations are announced

The Oscar nominations have been announced and this year is one full of wild cards with nominations in almost every category that have no clear winners. Leading the pack, and probably the most surprising, is Netflix's Emilia Pérez with 13 nominations including Best Picture and International Film. Its star, Karla Sofía Gascón, has also made history as the first openly trans woman to be nominated in the Best Actress category.

Tying with ten nominations each are Wicked and The Brutalist. Wicked scored Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nominations, but nothing for its director Jon Chu (Best Picture nominee Conclave was also snubbed in the Best Director category). The Brutalist earned nominations for Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor and Director among its ten. One of the biggest surprises are the five nominations for body horror film The Substance, a genre the Academy usually ignores, which also scored nominations for Best Picture, Actress and Director. The Apprentice also got some surprise love from the Academy following its distribution woes with its main subject, scoring nominations for its lead actor, Sebastian Stan, and supporting actor, Jeremy Strong.

Major snubs this year include Nicole Kidman for Babygirl, Angelia Jolie for Maria, Jamie Lee Curtis for The Last Showgirl and Denzel Washington for Gladiator II. With the historic and tragic fires engulfing the Los Angeles area, the Academy plans to focus on honoring the city in this year's ceremony and omitting the Best Original Song performances, focusing on the songwriters instead. The ceremony will be presented on March 2 on ABC and Hulu.
