Actor Tony Roberts dies at 85


Actor Tony Roberts has died at 85. Roberts made his Broadway debut in 1961 in Take Her, She's Mine, appearing in 24 shows total, including Barefoot in the Park, Don't Drink the Water, Promises, Promises, Play It Again, Sam, They're Playing Our Song, Arsenic and Old Lace, Jerome Robbins' Broadway, The Sisters Rosensweig, Victor/Victoria, Cabaret, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, Xanadu and The Royal Family.

Roberts re-teamed with Woody Allen for the film version of Play It Again, Sam, and worked with the writer/director several more times in films including Annie Hall, Stardust Memories, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Radio Days. Other notable films include The Million Dollar Duck, Star Spangled Girl, Serpico, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Just Tell Me What You Want, Amityville 3-D, 18 Again!, Popcorn and Switch.

Roberts also made appearances on many TV shows over the course of five decades including his first role on 1965's The Trials of O'Brien, The Edge of Night, Love, American Style, Night Gallery, Phyllis, McMillan and Wife, The Love Boat, The Four Seasons, Finder of Lost Loves, Trapper John, M.D., The Lucie Arnaz Show, Hotel, Matlock, The Carol Burnett Show, Murder, She Wrote, All My Children, Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. TV movie credits include The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case, The Girls in the Office, A Question of Honor, A Different Affair, Our Sons, Not in My Family, The American Clock, and his final role in the Dirty Dancing remake as Max Kellerman.

Roberts was also the narrator for three Star Wars podcasts focusing on the original trilogy of films. Roberts was never nominated for Emmys or Oscars or Golden Globes, but he did receive two Tony Award nominations for Best Actor in a Musical (1968) in How Now, Dow Jones, and Best Featured Actor in a Play (1969) in Play It Again, Sam. He released his memoir, Do You Know Me?, in 2015 which he published independently because no major publisher would handle the book unless he included details of Woody Allen's personal life. He also voiced the character of Detective Stone Barrington in a series of audio books by Stuart Woods.

Roberts died from complications of lung cancer at his home in Manhattan.
