The 79th Tony Awards nominations are announced
The 79th Tony Awards nominations were announced May 5, with big and small screen-to-stage adaptations -- The Lost Boys and Schmigadoon! -- snagging a massive 12 nominations each, both competing in the Best Musical category. The revival of Ragtime was just behind them with 11 nominations, and Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, Cats: The Jellicle Ball and Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show earning nine nominations each. In a notable bit of history, Rose Byrne achieved the rare feat of scoring both an Oscar and Tony nomination in the same year (for the film If I Had Legs I'd Kick You and the play Fallen Angels). Another important milestone - June Squibb has made Tony Awards history as the oldest nominee ever at 96, for Featured Actress in a Play for her role in Marjorie Prime. She took the record from Lois Smith who previously held the record for her 2020 nomination for The Inheritance at age 89.
With the nominees basking in glory, there were some very surprising snubs, one no bigger than Lea Michele for her leading role in the revival of the musical Chess, who many thought was a shoo-in for a nom. And after last year's Broadway infatuation with Hollywood stars treading the boards, many high profile names were also omitted, including Adrien Brody (The Fear of 13), Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter (Waiting for Godot), Jon Benthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Dog Day Afternoon), Ayo Edebiri (Proof), Jean Smart (Call Me Izzy), Don Cheadle (Proof) and Cedrick the Entertainer and Taraji P. Henson (Joe Turner's Come and Gone). Other actors with a screen presence who did score nominations also have notable stage careers, including Luke Evans (The Rocky Horror Show), Daniel Radcliffe (Every Brilliant Thing), Nathan Lane (Death of a Salesman), John Lithgow (Giant), Mark Strong (Oedipus), Carrie Coon (Bug), Lesley Manville (Oedipus), Rachel Dratch (The Rocky Horror Show) and Ana Gasteyer (Schmigadoon!).
The Tony Awards will be broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+ Sunday, June 7 at 8:00 PM ET, with the ceremony returning to Radio City Music Hall. Singer P!NK will be the host.
